Preference for scholarships is given to students from Southwest Ohio and Virginia. The recipients need to have completed one full academic year at the University of Cincinnati. The recipients for this scholarship are to have an overall GPA at the University of Cincinnati of 3.0 and be willing to undertake a commitment to perform at least two hours of community service in a nursing related field each month during the academic year.

Recipients of scholarships have sent in heart-warming letters of thanks. One said, "By awarding me The Iris Fallin & Ralph A. Cushman Scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden which allows me to focus on the most important aspects of education so I can become the best nurse possible. Your generosity has done more than just inspire me to give back to my community, but to work even harder in school and soon the nursing field. My next goal is to one day help students achieve their goals as nurses just as you have helped me."
